Acer Aspire One 10 now in Shops (in Hong Kong)

Acer Aspire One 10 are already available in shops in Hong Kong (yay!) and Taiwan. The rest of the world will be getting this baby in Mid-February (Acer announced a February 20th launch in Japan), according to DigiTimes. Remember, the Acer Aspire One is the world’s best selling netbook (even beating Asus).
The specs lowdown:
Intel Atom 1.6GHz N270 (950GSE chipset)
1GB RAM
SDHC Card slot
x3 USB ports
Optional 3G
Josh’s Verdict: Just remember though, if you’re into performance, we suggest you get the Asus Eee PC 1000HE rather than this, as this has the latest Intel Atom processor N280 1.66GHz and the new G40 chipset, which can play 720p video. Meanwhile, Nvidia Ion can play 1080p videos. Oh wells.

High Quality Acer Aspire One 10" Shots

Seriously. Are you sick of those grainy spyshots? Well, stop asking for them, you’ll got them right here!
According to SlashGear : It looks like Acer is doing a good just of scaling up the size of their portable notebook without loosing the basic concept. We can see that the trackpad buttons have made a bit of a journey to just below the pad. .  Good news though on the underside of the device as there are not three panes that can be removed to access the internals rather than the one that was previously on the Aspire One. Also the second memory card reader has been removed from this mode

As we stated previously the new 10.1-inch Acer Aspire is expected to include the standard Atom processor and anywhere up to 2GB of RAM. The screen should have the same 1024 x 600 screen resolution as seen in previous modes.  It is nice to see a larger screen without bumping the price up to a higher price range.

What’s Gangsta? SlashGear for providing these shots. You guys are awesome!

More 10-inch Acer Aspire One rumors

We’d already gotten a solid word from Acer Taiwan president Scott Lin that there would indeed be a 10-inch Aspire One in early 2009, and now we’ve got some purported pictures and informations to chew on. According to the Aspire One fan-blog macles*, the upcoming revision will come in white, black and red flavors, with a 10.1-inch screen (at the same 1024 x 600 resolution of the existing model) and options for 3G and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. Perhaps most exciting — to us non-mutants, anyways — is the removal of those pesky trackpad-flanking mouse buttons, with a regular-looking button below the trackpad instead doing the honors. Less exciting, however, is the purported lack of Linux and SSD SKUs. The laptop also dropped its Storage Expansion slot in lieu of a good old-fashioned multi-card reader. All-in-all, it sounds like some very mainstream tweaks to an already ultra-popular netbook, and we can’t fault Acer for that. Word is the new Aspire One will be landing in February, no mention of price just yet.

Acer Aspire 8930G: Core 2 Quad Mobile!

Acer’s just updated their 8930G gaming line, adding the 8930-7665 to its arsenal. This 18.4-inch beast boasts Intel’s new (and surprisingly affordable) Core 2 Quad Mobile Q9000 CPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 500GB 7200 SATA hard drive, and NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GT graphics with 512MB of dedicated video memory. Other than that, it’s identical to previous 8930G models. Sure, it’s a little extreme, but hey — why not? It’s available now, if you’re willing to drop $1800. Read

Mac OS on a netbook? Here’s the compatibility list.

Who needs Psystar?
Apple says it’s had “pretty interesting ideas” for a Mac netbook, but it’s everyday users who’ve already taken action. Due to their similar technical underpinnings, most of the popular netbooks can run OS X, but there are plenty of caveats: non-functioning components which lack drivers and need to be replaced—or which simply can’t be gotten to at all.
Unfortunately, the Googles are choked with info, and much of it’s out of date. I’d like to maintain a one-look chart to help people figure out out if their netbook (or one they’ve got their eye on) will run it well enough to their needs.
The short answer: get an MSI Wind or Dell Mini 9. Thanks to new WiFi drivers (direct download), the Wind runs the whole show out the can.
osxnetbooks5.png Now, I’m 100 percent sure this first version has errors and omissions: post updates and corrections to the comment.
If you’re thinking about making yourself a Hackintosh, know that it’s still not a no-brainer. For starters, standard OS X disks won’t work: you’ll need to grab a hacked version of it from the tubes. This contravenes Apple’s EULA, even if you own a legal copy. The following guides also generally require an external DVD drive and familiarity with the terminal.

3G Acer Aspire One for $99? It’s actually $1,540!

That Radioshack ad featuring the $99 3G-equipped Acer Aspire One? That was real. And so was AT&T’s wishfully priced mandatory 2-year data plan.
The 3G Aspire One goes on sale December 14th, and it looks to be a Radioshack exclusive for the time being. Packed with the standard 8.9″ screen, 1GB of RAM, and 160GB of storage, this Atom-powered 3G laptop looks attractive at $99…until you realize that eligible AT&T plans start at $60/month.
Over the course of two years with service, this system will cost the user a total of $1,540. Internet access or not, I draw the line at my underpowered laptop purchases when they hit the triple digits.

The Acer Aspire one netbook with integrated 3G wireless technology, is available starting Dec. 14 exclusively at RadioShack stores nationwide for $99.99 when combined with qualifying AT&T mobile broadband service. (PRNewsFoto/RadioShack Corporation)

Acer takes the "most netbooks sold" crown from ASUS

The hotter-than-ever netbook market — which has seemingly been headed Acer’s way for a while now — has seen its numbers for the third quarter of 2008 arrive, and the Aspire One has indeed overtaken ASUS Eee PC as top dog in units moved. Acer’s captured 38.3 percent of the market share, selling 2.15 million netbooks, while ASUS sold about 1.7 million, or 30.3 percent. Possibly adding insult to injury, we hear that an XP-loaded Aspire One can be yours for $299 today at Best Buy. We doubt ASUS will be taking its toys and going home any time soon, but we might’ve heard a few sniffles coming from its corner during recess.

10-inch Acer Aspire One coming Q1 2009

Acer’s top-selling Aspire One is set to break into 10-inch territory as early as February or March. This according to Scott Lin, Acer Taiwan president. Also on the books are 12.1-, 13.3-, and 15.6-inch LED-backlit laptops for 2009 — a 14.1-incher should hit this year with a price of NT$40,000 or about $1,200 of the green, presidential stuff. Acer’s Aspire One A110X "Black Edition"

The Aspire One is selling really well, in spite of the fact that it kind of gets lost in the overwhelming wilderness of more exciting (cooler, if you will) netbooks, so it’s not necessarily surprising to see it appearing in new and zany colors… like black. Sure, it’s exactly the same as every other Aspire One 110 we’ve ever seen, but this one is… all black. In fact, it’s like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black. The special “Black Edition” has touched down in Germany for €400 (or about $500), which is a bit more than we’re used to paying for the old 110, but it seems worth it to express so much with so little effort.

My verdict: Would you pay more for a colour? We’ll see.
