Josh’s MacWorld Predictions
New Mac minis
Oh yes. That “budget” computer for your granny learning how to use a computer, or the better-than-the Apple TV alternative. This time, we’re looking at a black and aluminum look, versus the white plastic. And we’re also seeing Nvidia 9400 chipsets, over the old Intel GMA950 chipset. That means a HUGE boost in graphics performance, even though it’s still integrated graphics.
New iMacs
Once again, I think that Apple will ditch Intel’s chipset and move onto Nvidia’s more powerful chipset.
New 17″ MacBook Pro
Oh yes. Remember that MacBook that got rejected during Apple’s Spring Notebook event? Well, the rumor is that it’ll appear tomorrow (or today, depending on your timezone). New reports released in the past few days have revealed that Apple will be releasing the new 17″ MacBook Pro as early as Macworld. Aside from adopting the NVIDIA chipset and aluminum unibody design, the most notable change that was first reported by 9to5Mac is the elimination of a removable battery. Instead, Apple is said to have chosen a slimmer but longer-lasting battery that is not replaceable, as in the MacBook Air.

New Mac mini mentioned in third party press release
It seems like the signs are pointing to a refresh of the Mac mini when this year’s Macworld rolls around. According to a press release by SeeFile, their new (version 4.6) web server software can be purchased bundled with a Mac mini server with 1 terabyte of storage — which is odd enough, since the largest internal drive that ships with the thing is 120GB. And how about the release itself, indiscreetly titled: “New Mac Mini Hardware to Be Supported by Revolutionary SeeFile Web Sharing DAM Software.” Of course, this could all be mere speculation, rumors and innuendo. We’ll find out soon enough, won’t we? Read

17" Unibody MacBook Pro with Non-Removable Extended-Life Battery?
9to5Mac reports that Apple will be finally be releasing a unibody 17″ MacBook Pro at Macworld, but with an interesting twist. According to the rumor site, the new laptop will have a super slim non-removable battery. The advantage of the new design will be a more extended run time than current models.
9to5 also expects that the 13″ plastic MacBook will be phased out which may bring the low-end aluminum model closer to $1000.
Josh’s Verdict: How many times in your life did you actually need to remove your battery? Really?

Google Easter Egg: Google Chrome on iPhone?
Uh, oh. You remember that Google Easter Egg we mentioned earlier? The one that allows you to browse within the app. Well, we got to, you know – thinking (for once) about this little browsing within the Google Mobile App thing. Guess what. You aren’t using Mobile Safari – as far as we (an broswer detection pages we checked) can tell. Does Google have their own WebKit based browser built into the Google Mobile App?
Or might Google be using Safari’s Webkit engine and throwing off the browser detection scripts. We’re sure someone out there is smart enough to help out.
Mobile Safari on the left vs. Google‘s iPhone browser on the right. The browser detection plugin sees different versions of Safari for each browser. Theoretically, they should be giving the same browser versions if Google‘s Mobile App is using Mobile Safari to render pages.
Google‘s Browser also has navigation buttons and the ability to open in new windows (see bottom). So what does this mean? It kinda breaks the ol’ rules of the App store as far as we can tell.

MacWorld site: Concealed banners hints New Products
Despite lessened expectations for next week’s Macworld Expo, the Moscone Center venue for the trade show already sports roughly a dozen sprawling, cloth-concealed banners that hint at several product announcements.
Five banners shrouded by white cloth, approximately 60 feet in length, can be seen immediately upon entering the Moscone South Hall. Three hang just above eye level on the ground level while the other two sit just above the entrance to the south hall exhibits.
Inside, contractors have recently begun to piece together Apple’s booth, where another half dozen or so banners can be seen concealed by black cloth. At least one narrow banner spans the width of the booth while a few others run the height of the hall, from the ceiling to the floor. (The banner setup looks similar to last year’s).
Meanwhile, a Mira Mobile production crew was in full swing outside the Moscone West, apparently partaking in a dry run of next Tuesday’s inaugural keynote address, to be hosted by Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller.

A bird’s eye view of the Moscone South.
Josh’s Verdict: I which someone would unlift those banners for a spyshot

iPhone 3G Unlock Problems? Try v0.9.4
Yellowsn0w, the illustrious iPhone 3G unlocking software, dropped with the Times Square Ball yesterday, but the first beta edition didn’t work for many. Hopefully the updated 0.9.4 beta from the iPhone Dev Team should resolve those issues and allow all those Jesusphone 3Gs to be released from their AT&T shackles. So if our step-by-step guide left you frustrated and furious, give it another go with the updated software.

Google iPhone App has an Easter Egg!
Google put an easter egg in the menu of their iPhone application, but they hid it so well that no one stumbled upon it, so they simply decided to blog about it to reveal the gem.
If you have the Google Mobile App installed on your iPhone, go to the Settings tab, scroll to the bottom and keep swiping upwards until a secret option dubbed ‘Bells and Whistles’ appears (this also works in the foreign language versions of the app, and it will stay there once you’ve found it).
The hidden menu lets you change the theme color of the app and its default sounds to chicken or monkey noises. It also enables you to turn on a ‘Live Waveform’ which visualizes speech as a graph, and an effectively useful one that lets you opt to to open hyperlinks in the app itself.
Now go tell all your friends that you found it first!

Mac mini to get Mini DisplayPort?
Bringing its least expensive system up to par with features in the rest of its lineup, Apple is due to revamp the Mac mini with multiple video outputs, AppleInsider has learned.
Those familiar with the company’s plans say the small form factor desktop will have both the Mini DisplayPort connector first introduced on unibody MacBooks but also a Mini DVI connector.
The reason for the addition is unclear, though it would potentially give the budget Mac dual display support that it has lacked since it was introduced as a PowerPC G4 model in 2005. All other current Macs either already include a built-in display and only need one video output or else use full-size video cards, such as the discontinued Power Mac G5 or today’s Mac Pro.
Such an update is helped in part by details that Apple itself has unintentionally confirmed through software leaks, which show the Mac mini using the GeForce 9400M chipset in a significantly new model that would, as a result, have the faster video performance and support for DisplayPort that are both missing in the current model’s Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics.
It also indirectly supports notions of a more flexible design that in past leaks has suggested might include the option of replacing the optical drive with a second hard drive.
People aware of the update, however, contradict claims of a partly black plastic enclosure and say that none of the material seems visible on the design, suggesting it won’t quite fit the black-and-silver color scheme of the iMac or other current Apple computers.
The new model is widely expected to bow at Macworld and may be accompanied by a new iMac at the same time.
