Dell releases Studio 15 Special Edition laptop

If you something extra from Dell’s normal Studio 15, you may want to consider the company’s new Special Edition model, which adds a “Black Vapor” paint job and, more importantly, a 1440 x 900 LED-backlit display. Otherwise, you can get it configured with your choice of Pentium Dual Core or Core 2 Duo processors, up to 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450 graphics (though Intel’s integrated GMA 4500MHD is standard). Prices start at $799, $849, and $949 for the standard configurations. Read

Josh’s Verdict: Pretty cheap deal to me. More pictures below.

Dell Adamo spyshots (Thinner than Macbook Air!)

First, there’s been a few shots around the web, but these are the clearest shots I’ve seen yet. Another thing is that there’s actually a white versioon as well as the Black version as seen by Engadget.

I think these are quite beautiful, especially for a Dell computer, it clearly shows a few looks from the Voodoo Envy 133. According to the source, the Adamo IS thinner than the Macbook Air. So there. You can fit this in a Manila envelope.

I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story…

Dell’s Studio XPS 1340 and Studio XPS 1640 sneak onto the scene

In all-too-familiar fashion, Dell’s new Studio XPS laptops have snuck onto the company’s store with nary a press release to keep them company. The 1340 is obviously the Studio XPS 13 we saw last month, while the 1640 is naturally the 16-inch version of the leather accented system. Both machines are (oddly) hitting at the same $1,199 pricepoint, with Core 2 Duo processors and the typical smorgasbord of options. The base model of the 1340 includes a P8400 processor, Vista Home Premium, a 13.3-inch WXGA LCD, 2 megapixel webcam, 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM, 320GB 7200rpm SATA drive, slot-loading DVD burner and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G graphics, while the 1640 is similar, but with ATI Mobility RADEON M86XT graphics.

Dell introduces 15.6-inch Inspiron 15 laptop: starts at $600

So, how’s about some news not originating from Las Vegas? Dell has chosen today to take the wraps off of its cleanly styled Inspiron 15 notebook, and while there’s nothing here to write home about, the price accurately reflects the low-key nature of the machine. Prospective buyers will notice a 15.6-inch widescreen panel, up to 4GB of RAM / 320GB of hard drive space, an optional Blu-ray drive, integrated webcam, Intel’s Core 2 Duo powering the ship and optional Bluetooth / facial recognition software. The rig is expected to be available online later this month starting at $600, though impatient souls can find non-configurable versions right now at Best Buy (USA) and Curry’s (UK). Read

Rumor: Dell Adamo to have DisplayPort, BluRay drive

Can you feel it? Dell’s Adamo is just about here, and the anticipation is palpable. We already learned that the unit’s 45-watt power adapter wouldn’t be anything special, but a Google cache shot of accessories and such from Dell’s own website is giving us a presumed look at what could be announced alongside the ultraportable. For starters, we get the impression that it’ll boast DisplayPort (judging by the DisplayPort-to-HDMI / VGA / etc. adapters) and at least have an option for a 2x Blu-ray combo drive. We’re also seeing 250GB / 500GB internal / external SATA drives and an auto / air adapter for powering the machine in your vehicle / personally owned 747. Only the suits in Round Rock know if these will actually come to fruition, but honestly, why bother hosting these up on your website if they weren’t on the way? Read

Dell confirms shocking truth: Adamo to rival MacBook Air

In a confusing timeline of events that only Charlton Heston could love, Dell confirmed today that it already has touted its soon-to-be-unveiled “Adamo” as a rival to the MacBook Air in a blogvertisement that posed itself as a rumor that Adamo would do just that:

“Rumor has it that Dell is coming out with a computer called Adamo that will rival the MacBook Air. At press time, the company was keeping the product tightly under wraps, but PC users rejoice – word on the street is that something cool is coming your way.”

The adblog appeared on a “luxury internet magazine,” and was noticed by The New York Times Bits Blog, who bounced the copy off Dell, which confirmed it as an ad: “We did this to wake up the personal computing category and create some buzz.” This further confirms (or perhaps pre-confirms) what we’ve heard about Adamo, but we’re looking forward to the actual unveiling of this laptop and forming our own real, factual opinions on the thing. Dell’s XPS 730x H2C Core i7 gaming PC benchmarked and tested

If you thought the original XPS 730 H2C was boss, get a load of this. The incredibly diligent benchmarkers over at HotHardware have taken the Core i7-powered XPS 730x H2C under their wings for a fortnight of testing, and they’ve got a baker’s dozen worth of review pages to display their findings. We can’t even begin to cover the array of graphs, bar charts and triple-digit FPS numbers here, but we can tell you that critics were duly impressed with how well the Core i7 performance compared to older Core 2-based offerings. Gaming performance was predictably “fantastic,” and even the single GeForce GTX 280 that it was packin’ held its own under pressure. All in all, this fanciful machine was deemed “a worthy update to what [reviewers] thought was the best XPS 700 series system to date,” and if you’ve got the coin, you’ll probably be incredibly pleased with what it delivers. Dive deep (and we mean deep) in the read link.

Mac OS on a netbook? Here’s the compatibility list.

Who needs Psystar?
Apple says it’s had “pretty interesting ideas” for a Mac netbook, but it’s everyday users who’ve already taken action. Due to their similar technical underpinnings, most of the popular netbooks can run OS X, but there are plenty of caveats: non-functioning components which lack drivers and need to be replaced—or which simply can’t be gotten to at all.
Unfortunately, the Googles are choked with info, and much of it’s out of date. I’d like to maintain a one-look chart to help people figure out out if their netbook (or one they’ve got their eye on) will run it well enough to their needs.
The short answer: get an MSI Wind or Dell Mini 9. Thanks to new WiFi drivers (direct download), the Wind runs the whole show out the can.
osxnetbooks5.png Now, I’m 100 percent sure this first version has errors and omissions: post updates and corrections to the comment.
If you’re thinking about making yourself a Hackintosh, know that it’s still not a no-brainer. For starters, standard OS X disks won’t work: you’ll need to grab a hacked version of it from the tubes. This contravenes Apple’s EULA, even if you own a legal copy. The following guides also generally require an external DVD drive and familiarity with the terminal.
