AMD’s ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4860 and HD 4830 with 40nm
Just after Nvidia released their new laptop GPU’s, AMD had to steal the show wit their ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4860 and HD 4830. The cards have AMD’s new 40nm process, with DirectX 10.1 support, dual DisplayPort out and 1080p acceleration claims galore (or 2560 x 1600, if that’s your thing). The 4860 sets itself apart with GDDR5 memory, and both cards do ATI PowerPlay, ATI PowerXpress and ATI Switchable Graphics for power saving. Read

New Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M/280M and GTS 150M/160M laptop GPU
The biggest newcomer is the GeForce GTX 280M, which NVIDIA claims is “the fastest laptop GPU on the market, with up to 50 percent more performance than previous generation enthusiast laptop GPUs.” The company is also pushing out the somewhat less exciting GeForce GTX 260M, GTS 160M and GTS 150M, all of which feature the company’s own CUDA compiling architecture and support PhysX gaming effects. ASUS, Clevo and MSI are all showing new laptops based on the new GeForce GTX 200M and GeForce GTS 100M Series GPUs here in Hannover, though there’s no word on when they are shipping. Read

Eurocom Clevo D900F: Core i7 Laptop!
Crazy Canadians. Well, here’s the 17-inch D900F. The 11.9 pound laptop has a Core i7 processor (all three Core i7 2.66GHz, 2.93GHz and Core i7 Extreme Edition 3.2GHz variants are available). It also has x3 500GB hard drives (i.e. 1.5TB of space!), 8GB of DDR3 RAM, a Nvidia G280 GPU and a Blu-Ray burner. Holy crap, you say. Fancy buying one? I’ll suggest sticking your your Eee if you don’t have a full pocket.

HP officially launches Firebird with Voodoo DNA
We figured it was destined for a CES release, and HP has confirmed that today’s the day. The hotly anticipated Firebird with Voodoo DNA has been properly introduced to the world, and within it will come an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU, twin NVIDIA GeForce 9800S graphics cards in an SLI configuration, hot-swappable 320GB hard drives (two of ‘em) and an advanced thermal management system to keep things cool, calm, collected and quiet. As we’d heard, the rig will be available starting on January 9th for as little as $1,799 directly from Voodoo, while those too frightened to hand over their credit card information online can hold tight ’til it hits select retailers (read: Best Buy, most likely) on February 1st. MSI at CES: Wind U115/U120, NetOn PC, entertainment & gaming laptops
If you thought that MSI would allow CES to pass it by without unleashing a veritable smorgasbord of new kit upon us, you’re dead wrong. For starters, the company will be showcasing its Wind U115 and U120 netbooks for the first time in the public eye at CES, and those oh-so-intriguing NetOn all-in-one machines we spotted overseas will also be making their US debut. Said rigs will arrive in 16-, 19- and 22-inch flavors, and it’s expected that Intel’s dual-core Atom will be powering the trio. Carrying on, we’ve got the EX625 and EX623 entertainment lappies joining the EX family with inbuilt subwoofers and Blu-ray drives, and the GT725, GT727, GT627 and GX420 will all be sliding into the gamer-centric GX line. Finally, MSI will be demonstrating its first “eco-friendly carbon fiber concept gaming notebook,” so we’ll definitely be sashaying over to wrap our paws around that. Wind NetOn – MSI will display 16″, 19″ and 22″ versions of the new All-In-One Wind NetOn line at CES. The AE1901′s power consumption is only 20% of that of a normal PC (250W). Its super thin appearance, wall-hung design, 16:9 HD display, touch screen and optional wireless connection will make it one of the most talked about products at CES.
G-Series – MSI will also be exhibiting the newest additions to its G-Series Gaming Notebook line at CES. This includes the GT725, GT727, GT627 and GX420 – MSI’ first 14″ model which features a 16:9 screen. MSI is especially excited to demonstrate GT725 and GT727, the first two models to break the 10,000 point 3Dmark barrier. MSI will also introduce the world to its first eco-friendly Carbon-Fiber Concept Gaming Notebook.
E-Series – MSI will also be launching two new versions of the advanced E-series Notebooks – EX625 and EX623. These new models feature ATI Radeon HD4670 video cards, a subwoofer, Dolby Surround II capabilities, 16:9 cinema-level displays, and Blue-ray optical drives.

Voodoo Firefly gaming laptop prototype
While most of the hype surrounding Voodoo right now pertains to the Firebird gaming tower, LAPTOP has discovered yet another undercover rig from the company’s arsenal worth swooning over. Before you go getting too excited, we must caution you that the Firefly is merely a prototype at the moment, but we all know concepts are made with the intent to commercialize. With the fine print behind us, it’s worth reading up on what this Voodoo DNA’d machine offered up; for starters, you’ll notice a 17-inch panel and a hefty 13-pound frame. There’s also a multitouch trackpad, keyboard with customizable backlighting, a secondary 4.3-inch 800 x 480 display sitting beneath the main screen, a 2.4GHz Core 2 Extreme CPU, 4GB of RAM, two ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 GPUs and a 250GB HDD. No benchmarks were allowed, but Far Cry 2 ran “silky smooth” even with details maxed. Acer Aspire 8930G: Core 2 Quad Mobile!
Acer’s just updated their 8930G gaming line, adding the 8930-7665 to its arsenal. This 18.4-inch beast boasts Intel’s new (and surprisingly affordable) Core 2 Quad Mobile Q9000 CPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 500GB 7200 SATA hard drive, and NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GT graphics with 512MB of dedicated video memory. Other than that, it’s identical to previous 8930G models. Sure, it’s a little extreme, but hey — why not? It’s available now, if you’re willing to drop $1800. Read

IXtreme 1.5 unlocks your Xbox 360 drive
We love a good hacker vs. hardware battle, and while Microsoft has thus far done a reasonably good job of keeping miscreants from diddling with the details of the Xbox 360′s firmware, applying patches and dropping ban hammers on those who don’t comply, as of this morning it seems to be losing the arms race. Team Jungle has released version 1.5 of its IXtreme firmware, allowing for (relatively) easy cracking and unlocking of Xbox 360 consoles containing LiteOn, BenQ, and Samsung DVD drives (i.e. the majority of them). That leaves only Hitachi owners out in the cold, but if that’s you don’t fret: your version is just a few weeks away. Happy homebrewing! Read

NVIDIA reportedly urging customers to buy new problem-free GPUs
NVIDIA has yet to step in and confirm this publicly, but a purported leaked memo from the outfit has been posted over at VR-Zone. What’s it say, you ask? Only that the company “strongly recommends that customers transition to the latest revision of the NB8E-SET GPUs as soon as possible.” Said revision taps a new Hitachi underfill packaging material that “improves product quality and enhances operating life by improved thermal cycling reliability.” If you’ll recall, certain PC vendors such as Dell issued their own firmware updates to combat the weak packaging set in the chip maker’s faulty GPUs earlier this year, but it appears that NVIDIA’s solution is to just let bygones be bygones and get on with the new and improved.
