Intel releases Moblin OS Alpha for netbooks

Intel made an Operating System? Oh yes, even though it’s a modified version of Linux (based on Fedora) for netbooks, specifically for installing on Intel hardware, ie., Intel Atom, as well as Core 2.

This is confirmed to work on Dell Mini’s and Acer Aspire One, but Eee’s won’t have working Wi-Fi. Remember, it’s an alpha, so it’s not final yet. Squash those bugs! Read

boxee alpha opens up on Mac, Ubuntu January 8; Windows invites to follow

Six months and 150,000 signups later, boxee is preparing to move from alpha to beta status, ready to drop any unsent invites on all interested parties by the 25th ahead of the open alpha period starting January 8, 2009. While OS X / Apple TV / Ubuntu have been the required attire so far, Windows users won’t be out in the cold much longer, as CEO Avner Ronen revealed in comments on the boxee blog that the Windows alpha program will start “early 2009″ with thousands of invites sent out every week. That enough to pique your interest in this media streaming set-top box software? Read

gOS Cloud instant-on OS shown on video

Good OS’ latest operating system was just announced this week, but already some cool cat with a video camera and some serious credentials has managed to record a sneak peek. Quite honestly, the instant-on gOS Cloud system isn’t all that amazing to watch tick, but if you’re looking for a brief glimpse at what’s apt to be fleshed out at CES, head on south of the break.

gOS "Cloud" instant-on OS comes to Gigabyte touchscreen netbooks

Not that we were too impressed with gOS when we first saw Rocket almost a year ago, but Cloud — the small footprint, quick boot Linux variant that Good OS introduced today at the Netbook World Summit in Paris — looks like an altogether different beast. Arriving pre-installed alongside Windows on the new Gigabyte touchscreen netbooks (perhaps some variant of the M912V), the new SplashTop-esque OS uses a web browser as its main interface, with an integrated dock providing such Web 2.0 mainstays as Skype, YouTube and the Google family of apps — and if this smattering of tools doesn’t meet all of your computing needs, you can always boot into your main OS from there. Cloud can be installed as a dual-boot partition on your hard drive or SSD as well as onto a flash chip hardwired onto a motherboard. That’s all we have for now, but you can bet we’ll be on hand to check it out at CES in January. Read

Linux hits the iPhone!

We knew this day would eventually come, but somehow we’re still misting up a little — Linux has been ported to the iPhone and iPod touch. Dev Team member planetbeing is the mastermind in charge of bringing everyone’s favorite open-source OS to Apple’s handhelds, and while it’s a little rough around the edges (read: no touchscreen drivers, sound, or WiFi / cell radio support), it’s definitely the first step on the road to hacking nirvana. The team is hard at work, and it even sounds like they’re thinking about porting Android in the near future (!), so hit the read link to try it out and lend a hand if you can — or just head on past the break for a quick vid of the port in all its text-scrolling glory.
