"Zune Mobile" gets mentioned, plot thickens for Project Pink

Okay, so he doesn’t have a thinner Xbox 360 than the rest of us — at least, not one that’s been captured on camera — but Paul Thurrott still knows his way around Redmond, so when he utters the phrase “Zune Mobile,” the cellphone-using world probably ought to sit up and listen. Rumors of Microsoft’s so-called Project Pink have failed to quiet down, but the latest intel seems to suggest that we’re looking not at a Microsoft-branded device but an entire software and service platform — something Danger’s pretty good at managing, and something Microsoft had said it liked when it closed the acquisition earlier this year. How does that tie into Zune Mobile, though? It seems that Pink might include Zune support as part of its offering, which could translate into a Zune Mobile software package for Windows Mobile (prior to the mythical version 7, says Thurrott) that would bring far more robust media support than any Microsoft-powered phone before it, and maybe — just maybe — a wireless download store. Ballmer’s already said Zune support would filter down to Windows Mobile eventually, and for what it’s worth, those alleged Windows Mobile 6.5 shots sure look Zune-ish, which would make true Zune support fit right in — and Danger’s in the PMX group alongside the Zune peeps, so that adds some credence to the potential Pink tie-in. Is it enough to resurrect WinMo from the brink of obsolescence in the consumer space? Likely not, but it’s a heck of a start, and might just quiet down those endless Zunephone rumors for a wee bit.

Microsoft’s First iPhone App: Seadragon Mobile

Microsoft apparently isn’t going to ignore the iPhone completely. They released a Seadragon application for the iPhone today that lets users “infinitely zoom” on high quality images with near zero transition times. The embed below shows Seadragon in action, and the experience on the iPhone is very similar. (random image from my PhotoZoom account, I know)

You can browse a few photosets included in the application or add your own content from Photosynth or any RSS feed.
Get the application at this iTunes link. More on the excellent 148apps.

How to: Spot a Xbox 360 "Jasper" unit

Welcome Xbox360forum Members! This is a Xbox Arcade, while the Jasper Xbox Pro is now shipping. Please subscribe to this blog if you found this interesting.

Okay, for the noobs: a Falcon unit has a 65nm CPU, 90nm GPU while a “Jasper” unit, the new one, still has a 65nm CPu but a nice, shiny 65nm GPU!

So, how do I buy the newer one then?

OK here’s the star of the show — the new GPU. The main body is the same size as the past GPU’s, which I did not expect, but there are a lot less components on the surface and the main heat die is considerably smaller and not centered on the package, either.

Old 90nm GPU for reference.

The CPU hasn’t changed much from the Falcon.

I’ll do some heat tests with this unit once I inevitably slap it into an Xbox 360 laptop. Now let’s move onto how you can spot one of these new units in the store!

The Xbox 360 box has a hole at the top of it where the bar code of the console is visible. Clerks usually scan this when you buy one. What you need to do it look at the lower left corner of this box. If you peer closely you can make out at least half of the voltage/amperage rating of the unit. The # of amps used by the 12 volt rail is the key to determining which console it is. The photos below show this in detail.

14.2 amps equals a Falcon unit (65nm CPU, 90nm GPU). Please keep in mind there’s nothing wrong with having one of these, I play mine a lot and it’s fine. You might not be able to see the whole voltage listing just through the peep-hole, but you should at least be able to see if a 14.2A or 12.1A is just to the left of the “5V”.

12.1 amps equals a Jasper unit (65nm CPU, 65nm GPU). This voltage rating is also listed above the power input, but of course you can’t see that when it’s in the box.

There has been a lot of discussion about lot #’s, power supply ratings, and things of that nature being used to find Jaspers. I have found those to be unreliable. For instance, this Jasper was lot #0842X. However at Circuit City today I saw a 0843X Arcade unit, but it was 14.2 amps.

Also this particular Jasper came with a 175W power supply (like the Falcons used). They are probably trying to use up all the older PSU’s and thus it was packed with the unit. Keep in mind that even if this Xbox only needs 150W it’s not a issue to power it with a 175W supply, just like people who put 700W PSU’s in their PC’s for no apparent reason.

Above we see the power port of the Jasper 360. Note how it has a slit in the middle of the top plastic bar. The plugs on the PSU’s are designed in a way to be forwards not backwards compatible. That is, an original 203W PSU will fit in any Xbox 360, but because of these ‘keying”, a new 150W PSU will only fit in an Jasper. Likewise a Falcon PSU will fit in a Jasper but not vice-versa.

So yes, check the amperage rating of the unit at the back — it’s the most sure-fire way to find a Jasper from what I have seen.

Microsoft Vista Ultimate gets the (PRODUCT) RED treatment

It’s not like (PRODUCT) RED versions of Windows Vista haven’t been shipping on associated systems for months now, but for those who’d prefer to keep the rig they have and just get a colorful / charitable upgrade to Microsoft’s latest OS, this is for you. Listed on the official (PRODUCT) RED website and up for pre-order now at Amazon, the special edition of Windows Vista Ultimate is slated to ship on December 15th. There’s not too many extras here to make you splurge for a second copy (a few new wallpapers and a big warm, fuzzy feeling are definitely nice, though), but those looking to get a new OS and support the push to end AIDS in Africa can buy in now for $219.95 ($64.95 for students).

Blue & red Zune 120s available just in time for the holidays

It looks like Microsoft’s trying to reel in shoppers not only through price cuts this holiday season, but by introducing some new colors as well. The folks up in Redmond have just made blue and red versions of the socializing little PMP available on its Zune Originals site. Prices start at $249, and the company suggests placing orders by the 19th to ensure delivery by Christmas Eve. Sure, It may not be a Gears of War 2 special-edition, but it’s definitely an alternative to black. So if you’ve been looking for something to give that special someone — and nothing on our guide matches your style — be sure to hit Microsoft’s site to check out all your options. Read

Microsoft to push cool factor with retro-inspired clothing line

It’s actually kind of amazing how much dough Microsoft has spent over the past little while in an attempt to polish its image in the minds of the general populace, and as if those “I’m proud to be a PC” and completely incomprehensible Gates / Seinfeld spots weren’t enough, the Redmond-based outfit is about to roll out its own clothing line (dubbed “Softwear”) this month. And no, we’re not kidding. Not even a little. Microsoft has purchased the assistance of Crispin Porter & Bogusky in order to ensure the results are actually desirable, and it has also hired rapper Common as a spokesman. We can’t definitively say the shirt you see above is as fly as Pharrell’s Gizmondo Enzo tee, but we’d rock it. We’d rock it hard. Read

iPhone sales exceed Windows Mobile sales for first time

Gartner’s latest and greatest analysis of the global smartphone industry is in, and there are quite a few interesting nuggets tucked within all those percentages. For starters, the sector still managed to grow 11.5% in Q3 2008 compared to a year prior, but that increase is the smallest since it began tracking. Of course, given the current economic climate, we’d say it’s a win to see any number not in the negative. Moving on, we see Nokiamaintaining its numero uno status with 42.4% market share, though it did recognize a rare decline in sales of 3% year-on-year; as for RIM, its BlackBerry phone sales increased an amazing 81.7% in Q3. We’re also clued in to why Apple was rumored to be hacking its iPhone productionsome 40% in Q4, as the company has some two million units of inventory built up in the supply channel. Finally, we’re told that “for the first time (meaning in this quarter), iPhone sales exceeded sales of Microsoft Windows Mobile devices worldwide and in North America,” and beyond that, “open-source initiatives like Android and Symbian Foundation [are set to] challenge Windows Mobile’s licensing model in the short-term.” Need we really reiterate how badly WinMo 7 is needed?
