Josh’s Verdict: Do you know where all my pocket money is going to go now? It looks so sweet! Microsoft should had launched a touch screen Zune ages ago. But knowing Microsoft, it won’t be available in Hong Kong…

Zune 30′s are back to the Social
Well, that was a wild way to end 2008, but Zune 30 users should be back in the saddle now that 2009 is here, as of about 7 am EST. In case you missed Microsoft’s sage advice on the issue, you’ll need to let the player completely drain its battery, then plug it back into a power source and all should be right as rain. Hopefully you didn’t do anything drastic like removing the battery (voids the warranty) or use up all 10 of your free Zune Pass songs during those dark, dark hours of Zunelessness. Read

Zune 30GB brickification acknowledged by Microsoft
For all of you Zune 30 owners who woke up this morning to find your PMP frozen in despair at the thought of spending another year alone, Microsoft has finally acknowledged their boo-boo and explains it thusly: There is a bug in the internal clock driver causing the device to choke on the last day of a leap year. Rest assured, however — although they may not be issuing an update for the device any time soon, the issue should resolve itself whenever January 1, 2009 rolls around. So have a safe and happy New Year, and let’s hope they do something about this by 2012. Read

30GB Zunes Fails around the world
It seems that a random bug is affecting a bunch, if not every, 30GB Zunes. Real early this morning, a bunch of Zune 30s just stopped working. No official word from Redmond on this one yet but we might have a gadget Y2K going on here. Fan boards and support forums all have the same mantra saying that at 2:00 AM this morning, the Zune 30s reset on their own and doesn’t fully reboot. We’re sure Microsoft will get flooded with angry Zune owners as soon as the phone lines open up for the last time in 2008. More as we get it.

"Zune Mobile" gets mentioned, plot thickens for Project Pink
Okay, so he doesn’t have a thinner Xbox 360 than the rest of us — at least, not one that’s been captured on camera — but Paul Thurrott still knows his way around Redmond, so when he utters the phrase “Zune Mobile,” the cellphone-using world probably ought to sit up and listen. Rumors of Microsoft’s so-called Project Pink have failed to quiet down, but the latest intel seems to suggest that we’re looking not at a Microsoft-branded device but an entire software and service platform — something Danger’s pretty good at managing, and something Microsoft had said it liked when it closed the acquisition earlier this year. How does that tie into Zune Mobile, though? It seems that Pink might include Zune support as part of its offering, which could translate into a Zune Mobile software package for Windows Mobile (prior to the mythical version 7, says Thurrott) that would bring far more robust media support than any Microsoft-powered phone before it, and maybe — just maybe — a wireless download store. Ballmer’s already said Zune support would filter down to Windows Mobile eventually, and for what it’s worth, those alleged Windows Mobile 6.5 shots sure look Zune-ish, which would make true Zune support fit right in — and Danger’s in the PMX group alongside the Zune peeps, so that adds some credence to the potential Pink tie-in. Is it enough to resurrect WinMo from the brink of obsolescence in the consumer space? Likely not, but it’s a heck of a start, and might just quiet down those endless Zunephone rumors for a wee bit.
